Top New York Portrait Photography Locations
When people think of photography in New York, the iconic Times Square location and Central Park certainly come to mind but there are so many options to consider! Whether you are visiting the Big Apple for the first time and looking to get memorable portraits of your trip or you’ve lived there for years, here are some new and inspiring ideas of where to get amazing portraits.
As a leading portrait photographer in NYC, I specialize in capturing stunning images that tell your unique story. While in studio photography has it’s place, I always look forward to natural settings and I can come to you anywhere in the city to make your vision a reality.
Here are my top ten locations for photoshoots in NYC that I can recommend from experience. Also, I’ve included potrait photos from most of these locations:
The Highline - This elevated park offers stunning views of the city skyline and unique architectural elements. Like anywhere in NYC it can sometimes be crowded and the walkway can be fairly tight but, there are some great more private locations on the northernmost side by Hudson Yards. From the Highline, you can reach the Vessel (north) and the Whitney / Little Island (south). All three locations can offer some cool photo opportunities including the Whitney’s large outdoor balconeys looking out over the city!
Central Park - With its iconic bridges, winding paths, and scenic vistas, Central Park is a classic choice for any photoshoot. I’d highly recommend the Pond at Central Park, the Bethesda Terrace, and the jutting rock formations off of East Dr (se corner of the park).
Times Square - The bright lights and bustling crowds of Times Square create a dynamic and exciting backdrop for your photos. A good photographer will know how to safely bring subjects into the street for an iconic shot. Depending on when you go it will be extremely busy but that’s part of the fun and the downtimes are from 2am to 9am so just plan on it being packed.
Dumbo Park - Located just across the river from Manhattan, this Brooklyn park offers panoramic views of the skyline and the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. This location is perfect for sunsets as you will get light filtering through the buildings of Lower Manhattan.
Jersey City - Surprised that we are in New Jersey for this? Don’t be, the views early in the day are spectacular and at night the sun bounces off the buildings creating amazing effects. With its waterfront views of the city and charming neighborhoods, Jersey City is a great option for a photoshoot that's a bit off the beaten path but also closer to Manhattan than you think. In fact, it’s only one stop from the World Trade Center PATH station.
Little Island - This new public park on the Hudson River offers unique architectural elements and stunning views of the city. It also offers some green space and nature that are hard to find in the city.
The Edge - This observation deck in Hudson Yards offers panoramic views of the city from 100 floors up and offers glass buildings
Grand Central Station and Moynahan Station - These historic train stations offer unique architectural elements and a classic New York City feel. Grand Central is well know but Moynahan was recently renovated and the natural lighting is spectacular!
Long Island City Gantry Plaza State Park - This park offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and is located just across the river in Queens. Take the 7 from Grand Central and get off at the next stop (Vernon Jackson Blvd). From that station it’s a three block walk to the waterline.
Soho Streets - The cobblestone streets and historic buildings of Soho offer a charming and photogenic backdrop for any photoshoot.
And this is just the beginning! Whether you're looking for a classic New York City feel or something more off the beaten path, I can help you find the perfect spot to capture your unique style and personality.
