The Best Outfit and Clothes for a Photoshoot

What is the best outfit you can wear for a photoshoot? As a New York based portrait photographer, the question I get asked the most is also one of the most important factors that can make or break your images is your outfit choice. What you wear can influence the mood of the photo, complement or clash with the environment, and impact how you feel and present yourself in front of the camera. Here are some tips on how to choose the perfect outfit for your next photoshoot.

With corporate headshots, your company will often dictate wardrobe.

  1. Consider the location and theme. Whether you're shooting in a studio or outdoors, the location and overall theme of the photoshoot should guide your outfit choice. For example, if you're taking beach photos, you may want to wear a flowy dress or casual beachwear, while a more formal outfit may be appropriate for an indoor studio session.

  2. Think about color and pattern. The colors and patterns you choose for your outfit can either enhance or detract from the photo. Bold, bright colors can create a vibrant, energetic look, while muted tones can provide a more subdued, elegant look. Be mindful of patterns as well - too many patterns can clash and distract from the overall composition of the photo. My advice is if you are unsure about the color and pattern to be conservative. Unless a specific color is important for you personal brand black is always a safe bet.

  3. Dress for your body type. Choose clothes that flatter your body type and highlight your best features. Avoid clothes that are too tight or too loose, and opt for clothing that fits comfortably and shows off your figure in a flattering way.

  4. Choose accessories that add interest and tell your personal story. Remember when making choice, don’t overdo it. Choose one or two key accessories that complement your outfit and the overall theme of the photoshoot. Avoid wearing anything too distracting or that could overshadow you or your outfit.

  5. This may not be your outfit but, don't forget about grooming as hair, makeup, and shaving can play a big role in the overall look of your photos. Consider the style and colors of your outfit when choosing a hairstyle and makeup look. When it comes to facial hair, be intentional in your grooming. Keep it simple and natural for a timeless, classic look, or go bold and dramatic for a more edgy, fashion-forward vibe.
