Portrait Photography: The Key to Client Satisfaction is Choice

I'm Abrahm Shearer, a New York based photographer. In this article, I’ll offer four tips on how client’s can dramatically affect the number of options they’ll receive on their contact sheets. I’m passionate about portrait photography and am always looking to improve my product and of course my client’s satisfaction. This can mean improving techniques, gear, and my general approach to the craft of portrait photography but, I’ve realized over the years that it also has to do with providing great communication. So, here are a few concepts client’s should keep in mind when preparing for their portrait shoot.

The Starting Point

First things first, by the time you step in front of my lens, we've already had a good chat about what you're looking for in a photo. Whether you're leaning towards a classic headshot that screams professionalism or you're in the mood for a more laid-back 3/4 body shot, we've got a clear plan. That's our jumping-off point. Now, you might be wondering about the backdrop. Honestly, it's not the star of the show. When it comes to professional portraits and headshots, especially considering the range of budgets we work with, the background takes a backseat to you. And to create an epic photo, we need to concentrate on four elements that truly steals the limelight: Wardrobe, Accessories, Expression, and Head Positioning.

Wardrobe: More Than Just Clothes

When it comes to wardrobe, there's a lot more at play than just fabric and patterns. The colors you choose can have a significant impact on your photos. The right hues can make your skin look radiant and bring out the sparkle in your eyes. On the flip side, the wrong colors can leave you looking washed out. But it's not solely about aesthetics; it's also about how you feel in those clothes. When you're dressed in an outfit that boosts your confidence, that inner glow is palpable. So, don't hold back—choose attire that makes you feel fantastic, because that confidence will shine through in every shot.

An example of a standout portrait led by the client’s wardrobe choice.

Expression: The Mood Maker

Your facial expression is like the brushstroke in a painting; it sets the tone and mood. A beaming smile can make a photo feel warm and inviting, while a smirk or a contemplative gaze can add layers of complexity. But here's the beauty of it—you're not confined to just one look. Digital cameras give us the flexibility to experiment with a range of expressions without adding costs. So, let your imagination run wild. Don't hesitate to try different moods and feelings. The more expressions you bring to the table, the more versatile and engaging your photo collection will be.

I absolutely love when I get genuine expressions and this is a great example!

Accessories: The Spice of Life

Accessories are the unsung heroes of portrait photography. They're like the seasoning in a well-cooked meal—small but impactful. Glasses can add a scholarly touch, hats can inject some personality, and jewelry can bring a dash of elegance or flair. Watches, handkerchiefs, and even canes can serve as interesting focal points. These elements provide an array of styling options that can dramatically alter the vibe of your photos. So, if you have a cherished accessory, like a family heirloom or a statement piece, bring it along. We'll experiment with different combinations to find the look that resonates with you.

Head Positioning: It's All in the Angles

Finally, let's delve into the art of head positioning. It's not just about finding your "good side" and sticking to it. The human head is incredibly versatile—it can tilt, swivel, rotate, and do all sorts of gymnastics. Even the slightest change in angle can transform how you look in a photo. My pro tip? After each click of the shutter, make a subtle adjustment to your head position. These incremental changes can yield a surprising variety of looks, giving you a plethora of options to choose from when selecting your final shots.
