The Best NYC Portrait Photographers

My Top Six New York City Photographers from the past 50 years.

New York City has been a breeding ground for exceptional talent in the field of portrait photography. Moving here two years ago has accelerated my growth as I’m constantly exposed to amazing talent of today and the past. From capturing the essence of influential figures to exploring the diversity of the city's inhabitants, these ten portrait photographers have left an indelible mark on the medium and I’ve included my favorite photos:

1- Richard Avedon - A true legend in the world of portrait photography, Avedon's iconic images have graced the pages of magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. His striking black-and-white portraits, often taken in a minimalist studio setting, have immortalized celebrities, artists, and ordinary individuals alike. This photo of French actress, Catherine Deneuve, is captivating to me. I love the texture and the contrast between the stillness and motion captured.

2- Zun Lee - Zun Lee is a photographer and visual storyteller who has gained recognition for his powerful and intimate portraits. Born in Germany and based in New York City, Lee's work often focuses on themes of identity, family, and the African American experience. He captures his subjects with empathy and authenticity, delving into their personal narratives and exploring the nuances of their lives. Lee's portraits, often taken in urban settings, provide a compelling glimpse into the diversity and complexity of New York City, showcasing the individuals who shape its vibrant fabric. Through his thought-provoking and empathetic approach to portraiture, Lee has made a significant impact on the contemporary photography scene in New York City and beyond.

3- Annie Leibovitz - Widely recognized for her powerful celebrity portraits, Leibovitz has created some of the most iconic images of our time. Her ability to reveal the essence of her subjects, often in unexpected and thought-provoking ways, has made her a leading portrait photographer in the industry. I’m typically not drawn to celebrity portraits as I think the celebrity skews our perspective but the emotion caught in this example is incredible. Personally I, love these moments and strive to capture them each time I pick up a camera.

4- Platon - Known for his captivating and emotionally charged portraits, Platon has photographed influential figures such as world leaders, activists, and celebrities. His ability to connect with his subjects on a deep level is evident in his portraits, which capture the essence of their personalities. As I was making my choices for favorite photos, I began to realize that most where in black and white. The lighting here is incredible and I love the way Platon has framed his subject.

5- Bruce Davidson - Known for his powerful documentary-style portraits, Davidson has chronicled the lives of people from all walks of life in New York City. His photographs capture the raw emotions and stories of his subjects, providing a window into the human experience.

6- Duane Michals - A master of storytelling through portraiture, Michals' work blurs the line between photography and narrative. His sequential images often explore themes of love, loss, and mortality, challenging traditional notions of portraiture and inviting viewers to engage with the stories behind the faces.

These six New York City-based portrait photographers have not only skillfully captured the outward appearances of their subjects but have also delved deeper, revealing the intricacies of their personalities, emotions, and stories. Through their artistry, they showcase the profound impact of portraiture in shedding light on the human condition and capturing the essence of individuals against the dynamic backdrop of the city. Their work serves as a testament to the profound ability of portraiture to go beyond the surface, offering glimpses into the depths of humanity and preserving moments that resonate with authenticity and meaning.
