The tools used are secondary to the vision which means a good portrait photographer can use a phone, an APSC, full-frame, medium format, or point and shoot camera. He/she might use natural light, flash, or constant lighting. It comes down to vision and the connection with the subject.

My Approach to Portraits:

Sometimes it only takes a moment to find the spirit of the subject while other times, it takes hours. At the end of the day, making the client happy is the most important thing but as an artist, I’m always striving to find the spirit of the subject.

While studio settings offer a distraction free setting I get more inspired by the possibilities of an on location shoot.

The process starts with an initial conversation in which we define the goals of the portrait shoot, the next step is filling out our portrait shoot questionnaire. This only takes a few minutes but ensures that everyone is on the same page about the delivery. Finally on the day of the portrait shoot, I take time to assess the comfort level of the subjects. If there is apprehension, we keep the camera in the bag until the subjects are comfortable. From there, we’ll take a few test shots and then get rolling. Throughout the shoot, I offer previews to the subjects and encourage them. At every step in my process, I’m thinking of the clients and working to get the most out of the process.
