Best Places to Propose in NYC
New York City is one of the most popular cities in the world for surprise engagements and proposals. And for good reason! The city has everything; iconic locations, stunning views, rooftops, parks, helicopters, and anything else that might come to mind for an amazing proposal. And even some of the best locations are in New Jersey (like the feature photo of this blog).
There is no doubt that photography is a big part of the day and as a professional portrait photographer based in NYC, this article will be taken from this perspective. In fact, along with some proposal photography examples, I’ll be using photos from my new Photobook and Guide aptly named- New York Cityscapes now available on Kickstarter. Back to the best places to propose in the city! This article’s goal is to help you find the perfect proposal spot in New York City.
Iconic Landmarks for a Memorable Proposal
There are no shortage of iconic landmarks to choose from so it should come down to your own sentiments but here are a few to get you started.
Central Park is only the 6th largest park in the city but, its 843 urban acres are the most visited in the United States. Being so big, there are a number of incredible spots to choose from but the most trafficked are Bow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace. The Ramble is a wooded paradise and has a waterfall, Belvedere Castle, ponds, and some other secluded spots if you are looking for a quiet spot.
Times Square is the exact opposite of quiet but could be ideal for couples who love attention. Well planned proposals are likely to get an applause from onlookers.
Brooklyn Bridge can either be an amazing backdrop or the walking path can serve as a great spot, especially now that the city has banned vendors easing the congestion. The best spots can be found in the Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo.
NYC Waterfront Proposal Locations
This gallery shows some of my favorite waterfront view locations.
Romantic and Photogenic Locations
New York City is not just about the hustle and bustle; it offers a plethora of romantic and photogenic spots perfect for a proposal. Consider the enchanting Dumbo area in Brooklyn. With the Manhattan skyline setting a breathtaking backdrop, this spot becomes a photographer's and a romantic's dream. The contrast of the city lights and the serene waterfront creates an unforgettable moment.
For those who dream of an urban fairytale, the rooftops of New York City are your stage. With the cityscape stretching into the horizon, a rooftop proposal offers privacy amidst the city's heart. The ambiance of a sunset or the glittering night sky adds a magical touch that's hard to replicate elsewhere.
Unique and Intimate Proposal Spots
Sometimes, the most memorable proposals are those that happen in the city's quieter corners. New York is filled with secret gardens, cozy cafes, and hidden terraces that offer a more intimate setting. These spots provide a more personal experience away from the public eye, perfect for couples who treasure privacy and subtlety.
For a touch of quaint charm, consider a proposal in one of the city's historic neighborhoods or a quiet corner of Greenwich Village. These areas offer a blend of old-world charm and modern sophistication, setting a romantic stage for your big question.
Seasonal Proposal Ideas
Each season in New York City brings its unique flavor, making it a year-round destination for proposals. Imagine a winter proposal with Central Park covered in snow, creating a white, pristine canvas for your special moment. Spring brings blooming flowers and gentle breezes, ideal for a proposal amidst the natural beauty of the city's many parks.
Summer and fall in New York are equally enchanting. The warm summer evenings are perfect for a waterfront proposal, while fall's colorful foliage provides a stunning natural backdrop in parks and along city streets.
Planning Your Proposal in NYC
Planning is key to a successful proposal. Consider the time of day, crowds, and the specific character of each location. Hiring a professional photographer, like myself, can ensure that these once-in-a-lifetime moments are captured beautifully. My new Photobook, "New York Cityscapes," showcases some of these stunning locations and can serve as an inspiration for your own proposal.
