Portrait Photographic Experiences in Times Square

Many consider Times Square the pulsating heart of New York City and nearly everyone of the estimated 50 million visitors take a selfie or have their photos taken. Officially the area known as Times Square (not Time Square) covers the blocks between 48th and 53rd Streets and 6th to 8th Avenues and naturally encompasses a great variety of scenes for photography and so serves as an ideal backdrop for stunning street and portrait photography. It’s true that many New Yorkers avoid this part of the city at all costs but as a photographer, I’m drawn to the space regularly. NYC Portraits: Exploring Shearer Portraits in Times Square

The fact is, we’ve spent a lot of time in Times Square. At Shearer Portraits, we work to create exceptional portrait experiences in New York City so knowing this area like the back of our hand is critical. Our team of skilled photographers understands the unique energy that Times Square offers and can help our clients navigate the traffic, people, scams, and get you in the perfect locations for the portraits you want and need. A great place to start is Broadway and 42nd near Times Square Subway station. This walk into the heart of Times Square is less busy than walking up 7th and it offer some unique perspectives. There are also plenty of spots on this route where your subject can stand up so you can get an on top of the world feel.

There are a number of architectural elements on Broadway that allow for cool upward looking perspectives like this one.

The Street Photo!

Next up is 7th avenue. At this stage, to avoid the crowds, it’s important to hop into the street to get the right shot. This might sound crazy but, it’s really not. The lights are long to keep traffic in control and when a red light hits on 7th, there is typically a stream of photographers and people jumping into the street to get an amazing perspective. In this photo below you can see a typical scene.

The number of photographers and subjects on 7th when the red lights hit makes it fairly safe. That being said, it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings.

Photographers in Times Square

So, as you walk up 7th towards Father Duffy Square, the crowds get progressively thicker. It’s here that you can easily hire a photographer on the spot for a quick photo to remember your experience. There is a huge variety of photography options here and generally these photographers are very very good at getting exceptional images. They will take 5 minutes and have a variety of delivery methods including digital and even prints at a kiosk. Cost varies but it’s relatively inexpensive at $10-$15 on average (this was an unscientific poll. If you only have a few minutes and want to walk away with an amazing photo, this is a great way to go.

Father Duffy Square

On the northern end of Times Square is Duffy Square. This New York City run park is an incredibly popular area for photographers as it looks down seventh avenue with the billboards, shops, and crowds on fully around you. A great perspective here is from the top of the red steps (which also serve as the roof for a TKTS discount broadway center) looking to the south.
